Mount Evelyn and Silvan Reservoir Walk
679 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre Bus Departing From Ringwood Railway Station
11:01 – 17:00
Enjoy a pleasant Sunday walk in the scenic environs of Mount Evelyn and Silvan Reservoir. Limit of 10 participants. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A moderate 11 km point-to-point walk with a few short steep sections. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Our walk commences on Tramway Track in Mount Evelyn which connects to Olinda Creek Track and Pipeline Track to provide a route through to Silvan Reservoir. While there is little evidence of its past uses, the route has served several purposes. Originally a tramway used for the collection of firewood to fuel lime kilns ran along the route. During the construction of the Silvan Reservoir an overhead cableway used the same corridor as it ran from the station at Mount Evelyn to the dam wall to convey building materials. Tracks along the route now provide service access to the pipeline which replaced the Mount Evelyn Aqueduct. For our purpose it provides a very pleasant walking track through a break in the eucalypt forest. Having made our way through to Silvan Reservoir Park we'll find a picnic table and enjoy our lunch break in the pleasant surrounds of the park. After lunch we'll stroll to the top of the dam wall for a view across the reservoir before leaving the park. We'll then follow bush tracks and cross over Olinda Creek to reach the last remaining section of the defunct Mount Evelyn Aqueduct. We'll follow the aqueduct track for around 2 km before meeting Monbulk Road which marks the end of our day's walk. Our return journey commences with a bus journey through to Lilydale to catch a train back to Ringwood or through to the city. FURTHER INFORMATION: melbournewater.com.au/community-and-education/about-our-water/water-storage-reservoirs/silvan | en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Evelyn_Aqueduct MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Arrive in time to catch the 679 Chirnside Park Shopping Centre bus departing from bus bay 10, Ringwood Railway Station at 11:01am. Westgarthtown Urban Walk, Thomastown - CANCELLED
Flinders Street Railway Station
10:00 – 16:00
This event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 virus. Read this ABC News article in which University of Sydney modelling demonstrates very clearly why staying at home at present can improve our outcome dramatically. Yes, we need to exercise, but for the next few weeks, the message could now not be clearer: STAY AT HOME! See our Socialising Online page for ways to stay healthy. Walk along green reserves in Thomastown and explore the original German colonial village of Westgarthtown that includes the Ziebell Farmhouse, its colonial gardens, Lutheran cemetery and bluestone chapel, where the earliest German settlers established dairy farms. Walk where John Batman met with the local leaders of the Wurundjeri Indigenous people and made a contentious treaty with them in 1835. Reflect on the impressive contribution of these settlers to the formation of Victoria's wealth and diversity, achieved however by the dispossession of the Indigenous first peoples' lands and hunting fields.  GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy, approximately 7 km, circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: From Thomastown station, we will walk down Main Street, then turn into Edgars Reserve that follows the Edgars Creek and has been re-planted extensively with native vegetation. Within Edgars Reserve, historians believe John Batman "negotiated" a treaty with the Wurundjeri people. We will walk up a pathway to the simple bluestone Lutheran chapel - the oldest operating Lutheran church building in Australia, dedicated in 1856. From the chapel, we'll cross the paddock to the original Ziebell Farmhouse. Ziebell's Farmhouse is open to the public, built between 1851 and 1856 with 61cm walls and is a typical German farmhouse design. Entry fee is $3 per person. It is surrounded by the original, shady colonial garden that features still healthy 140 year old roses. We’ll have lunch in these gardens, then walk to the oldest Lutheran cemetery in Australia nearby, then onto a heritage walk to see the other German farmhouses that constituted the original village. We'll skirt a sports reserve and return to Edgars Reserve for our return to Thomastown station. We can have an afternoon tea either at a covered outdoor cafe on the heritage walk or back at a reasonable kiosk with seating at Thomastown station. We will catch the 3:35pm train to Flinders St.  MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 10am at Flinders St Station for the 10:08am Mernda train. We'll travel in the front carriage. Gathering time outside Thomastown station 10:50am.  MAP REFERENCE: Melway map 8 grid H5 | Google map goo.gl/maps/NnReL3xVAk84psyH9.  DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 16 km, approximately 40 minutes by train. TRANSPORT: By train as described above or car parking available at Thomastown station. FOOD: Carry lunch, snacks and at least 1 litre of water. Winter Planning & Social Night - IN YOUR LOUNGE ROOM!
19:00 – 21:30
The Winter Planning and Social night will be taking place, but because all pubs are now closed, we will use the online Zoom facility to "meet" online. Bring along your dinner, and a beverage of choice, and join your Nomads friends online. Our quarterly planning night, in conjunction with the regular monthly social night. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:  Do you want to see more of a particular activity, or do you have a particularly favourite area of Victoria you would like to share with others? Do you have an idea for activities we can undertake while "locked down"? Come along to the planning meeting, and then stay for our monthly social evening where members talk about upcoming events, share a meal and compare notes on past activities. All members are welcome – you don't have to volunteer for an activity. New members are especially invited to this meeting as an orientation to Nomads activities.  MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7pm | click on https://us04web.zoom.us/j/558088970 to join. Either sign in to Zoom or provide an alias. If asked, choose the Online Video and Computer Audio options. Check out our Zoom Tips page for some background to using Zoom. Just in case you're asked for it (unlikely), the Meeting ID is: 558 088 970. BOOKING: not required, since we don't need to book the venue. Just click on https://us04web.zoom.us/j/558088970 after 7pm on Tuesday 7 April to attend. LEADER: Garry O. | Email the Leader if you have any questions. Bushrangers Bay to Cape Schanck Walk - CANCELLED
Bushrangers Bay Walking Track
11:00 – 16:00
** This event has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in line with the Victorian Government's order to shut down all non-essential services and in particular for Melbournians to not travel unnecessarily to regional areas. The most reliable source of information about COVID-19 in this rapidly changing scenario is DHHS (Department of Health and Human Services).  See our Socialising Online page for ways to stay healthy. This is a spectacular trail skirting rugged coastline by the waters of Bass Strait. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Medium 13 km circuit walk.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We follow the Main Creek Trail from the car park to Bushrangers Bay. The eucalypt forest gives way to shady thickets of coastal banksia and then to an isolated sandy beach at Bushrangers Bay. From there we follow the trail to Cape Schanck. We’ll have lunch near the 1850s Lighthouse. After lunch, we return the same way and then hopefully, time permitting, have coffee and cake at Flinders Bakehouse.
