Assassin's Walk - Albert Park to Carlton
Albert Park Station/Light Rail
10:00 – 16:00
Follow the life of John Freeman in colonial Melbourne, who re-invented himself as a model citizen after having been a prisoner for 27 years in Bethlem, London, for shooting at Queen Victoria in 1840. Learn about some of this city’s more colourful past in this walk, with a twist, through beautiful old Melbourne suburbs. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy 12 km point-to-point walk using footpaths.  ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: This walk will follow the Melbourne locations in the double life of John Freeman, who was born Edward Oxford and who at the age of 18, attempted to assassinate a young 21 year-old Queen Victoria on 10th May 1840 as she rode out of Buckingham Palace with Prince Albert. Edward changed his name when he arrived in Melbourne in 1857 following 24 years in Bethlam Lunatic Asylum. He transformed his life and made a great contribution to colonial life in Melbourne. No-one ever knew of his double life background. The walk will commence at his residence in Albert Park, then proceed through South Melbourne and Docklands onto St James Old Cathedral in West Melbourne, Melbourne's oldest church and a beautiful example of Georgian architecture. Edward/John became church warden there and ironically, the church holds a personal gift to the Colony of Victoria from Queen Victoria. We will lunch in the nearby Flagstaff Gardens then proceed through leafy Victorian Carlton to the Melbourne General Cemetery where Edward /John is buried.  The walk will include some background on Edward's early life, the assassination attempt and his subsequent trial for treason, the legal repercussions on the nature of policing throughout the then British Empire as a result of his actions that May day in 1840, and his transformed life during the decades of 19th century Marvellous Melbourne.  The walk will end in Carlton at the cemetery at approximately 4pm followed by an arvo tea in Lygon St, Carlton. CANCELLED due to illness of Farmhouse Host - Mixed Clothing Optional Bushwalk near Lancefield with optional BBQ & overnight
Lancefield
14 May 2022 10:00 – 15 May 2022 16:00
This event has unfortunately had to be CANCELLED due to the illness of the farm host, Colin. Colin was treated in hospital last week and is now in rehabilitation. However we expect that it will take longer than two weeks for him to fully recover and be able to host another event at his house, whch we've all very much enjoyed in the past. All the best Colin, we'll look forward to seeing again you later in the year. Email notification and refunds will be sent to all those who have already booked for this event. ___________________________________________ An almost clothing optional walk of medium difficulty through a neighbouring farm in the spectacular granite boulder country north of Lancefield. Wonderful views from some of the highest hills around. With the walk being in May you will probably want to wear some clothes. You will need to wear at least your shorts as the farm owner, and his daughter who rides around on her motorbike, are non-naturist. To relax after the event we plan to have massage tables available and are endeavouring to hire a spa. (To cover the cost for this we have needed to raise the cost for some of the tickets for this event. We hope you like it and that it is worthwhile.) GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Medium 6 km circuit walk (wearing at least your shorts). Much of the walking will be along faint vehicle tracks through the paddocks with some moderate climbs to get to the top of the hills for the views. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: SATURDAY WALK: This walk is designed to get to some of the best views in the district which are on a neighbouring farm near the overnight farm. We will meet and unload the cars at the overnight farmhouse anytime between 10am and 10.45am. Hot drinks and nibbles will be available until 11am. We will then take some of the cars about 3 km to a neighbouring property. From there we will start our walk through the open paddocks and over to some of the higher hills for the great views. Coming down off the hills will be very easy as it is a pleasant descent. Lunch will be eaten at a good viewing and sheltered spot along the way when we get hungry. After the walk we plan to head back to the overnight farmhouse for drinks and snacks at around 4pm. Later we can enjoy the spa and open fire and later can prepare for the evening BBQ at around 6pm. OVERNIGHT: After the BBQ we have been invited for an evening of socialising at the very comfortable farmhouse with its great open fire and now, a spa. This is followed by an overnight sleep, cooked breakfast and lunch at the farmhouse. . SLEEPING: For those staying overnight, there are two made-up queen size beds. Other people can sleep on the carpeted floor in the library or the lounge room - please BYO sleeping bag, sleeping mat/lilo, pillow etc. There is one spare doona, a few sleeping bags and a couple of spare foam sleeping mats and blow up air mattresses at the property. Or if you like, you can put up your tent on the back lawn. There is also room for campervans etc. BBQ: BYO meat and drinks. Basic salads and bread will be supplied. A few desserts and other snacks would be appreciated. TOWELS: Please BYO towels for sitting on, for a shower and to put on the massage table if you'd like one. BREAKFAST: Breakfast is supplied, including eggs and bacon, and for Sunday lunch there are always plenty of leftovers from the night before. OTHER OPTIONS: For those who would like to have a look around the very picturesque scenery at the overnight farm on the Sunday morning, we plan to do a short walk of about 1.5 to 2 hours along Mollison Creek, or to the Gorge, or to the host's back paddocks. This will be followed by lunch to eat up the spare food. Our host is happy for a few people to stay on until Monday as well - just let him know. BOOKING: By Wednesday 11th May. To register, click on Get Tickets. Choose the ticket that covers the activities you wish to participate in - walk, spa, BBQ and/or overnight.   RSVP FOR OVERNIGHT ACCOMMODATION: If you wish to stay overnight, you will need to SEND AN EMAIL to Colin, our farmhouse host, on LeaderColinP.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com to book your accommodation. Please state what accommodation you would like - bed, floor, tent or campervan. Please also include a contact phone number. Sleeping places in the house are limited to 18. The number of people staying for the BBQ is lmited to 24 so that we can all sit down to eat inside the house. There is no limit on tents and campervans. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. COST: There are four ticket types available for this event. Please choose the ticket that best suits your wishes. 1. More Tall Ship Voyages in Queensland
William Gunn Jetty & TMR Marina
08 May 2022 18:00 – 21 May 2022 17:00
The first advertised voyage in June 2022 is fully booked. These are two additional 4-day public voyages in May 2022 that I (Roger) will be sailing on. You need to book these directly on the Southpassage website. Sail on a tall ship in Far North Queensland in May 2022. Participate in sailing the ship and feeling the wind in your hair. Everyone sleeps in a communal cabin, and there are shared toilet facilities. This is a small discomfort to pay for the experience of sailing in the same manner that Captain Cook did. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: A basic level of fitness and dexterity is required to move around the ship while it is underway. You need a spirit of adventure, and embrace working as a team to sail the ship. However, no prior sailing experience is required and you will be trained on the job. At times you might have to be awake at night for up to 2 hours to assist in running the ship. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The ship is named South Passage. She is built on the same lines as a New York Pilot Schooner, and has a total length of 30 metres.  Refer to the Southpassage website for further descriptions of the 2 voyages, and the ship: Voyage 1 - MANLY to HERVEY BAY 9th to 12th May 2022 (you need to arrive Manly 8th May).    Voyage 2 - HERVEY BAY to ROSSLYN BAY 18th - 21st May 2022 (you need to arrive Hervey Bay 17th May) The emphasis is on having a good time and getting a range of experiences – not just hard-core sailing. You will never be bored!  Each of these voyages is for 4 days, and will cost around $600. A deposit of $150 is required, with the balance to be paid about 3 weeks prior to the voyage. It is on a first booked/first served basis. These voyages will be with the general public, and Nomads have not chartered the entire ship.  Voyage cost does not include transport to the start/end locations, but includes everything once you are on board.  South Passage does not have any powered winches, so we rely on your manpower to sweat the lines and do all tasks required to run the ship, in the same manner as the ancient mariners.  Of note, South Passage is a dry ship, and there's no smoking on board. My experience is that you will not miss this since there are so many activities to challenge your senses and keep you occupied. A great chance for a detox. Also naturism is NOT possible. In case of snap COVID-19 restrictions that prevent travel, the booking will be deferred to a later date, or a refund offered. BOOKING: Firstly access the Southpassage website, select your dates, then pay the $150 deposit. It is on a first-booked/first-on basis. Also click on Get Tickets on this event so Roger is aware that you have booked. FURTHER INFORMATION: southpassage.org.au. Or email Roger via LeaderRogerH.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Brisbane (Manly), or Hervey Bay, depending on which voyage you select.  MAP REFERENCE: Brisbane: Google map https://goo.gl/maps/5kP9NgboZW8uBRmU7 Hervey Bay: Google map https://goo.gl/maps/EZGuxRovAFbPt5c79 DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: A long way!!  Best to fly to/from Queensland. This cost is not included in the voyage cost above.  FOOD: All meals are provided on board. All preferences are catered for. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: It is generally balmy. However, if we get some rain it can be cool. A packing list will be provided. LEADER: Roger H. | Email LeaderRogerH.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com if you have any questions. The table is booked for us under the name of "Russell" from 10.20pm to midnight. You will have to wear your clothes in this venue, sorry. There is some parking in Station St and also around the corner in Bank St.  See you there. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We will meet out the front of the venue at 7.30pm if the weather is fine, or inside the foyer if it is raining. The time allocated for bowling is 8pm until 10pm. Bowling shoes will be provided for all. You will each be able to select a suitable bowling ball to use during the evening, and then can join in with others at any one of the lanes. Do not worry if you are on your own, we will ensure that everyone finds a group to bowl with. You do not need to be experienced in 10 pin bowling. This is all about having fun with like minded people. Depending on the number of bowlers at each lane, you can typically expect to complete up to two games. There will be a small competition with prizes which will be awarded based on the individual scores of the first game.  In order to maintain everyone's privacy, please note that no photographs will be permitted except as advised by the Event Leader on the night. Phones are not to be used during the evening, and we thank you for assisting us with this. Please see the Event Leader if you have any concerns. A BBQ dinner on Saturday night will be prepared by the Nomads and our hosts, and you may be asked to assist in preparation (cost included in bookng fee).  Bring your cutlery, plates and drinking mug/glass etc. (If you are staying offsite, this is required for the BBQ). Please indicate when booking if you wish to eat meat or vegetarian for Saturday nights BBQ meal. A ‘Camp kitchen’ will be set up in the new shed (if completed) or else the carport, with a BBQ, drinking water, electric urn / kettle, kitchen bowl for washing, a food preparation table and possibly a microwave oven and fridge.  CAMPING ACCOMMODATION: Bring your tent, swag, campervan, camper trailer, slide-on or caravan; esky or self-powered fridge; and outdoor weather-suitable clothing. Bring an outdoor chair too. Campsites are within about 100m of the house, cottage and shed; if weather is wet or cold, there is (if completed) a large 10m x 12m shed to shelter in or sleep in if wet. Alternatively, book your own accommodation off-site. Due to limits on the property’s ‘Biolytics’ wastewater system, two ‘Port-A-Loos’ will be provided (cost included in booking fee).  There is one shared shower in the cottage and limited water, so patience, short showers, your own towel and coordination will be needed. There is an under-cover solar-heated swimming pool, so bring togs and a towel. Fire restrictions are likely to still be in force, so we cannot have fires or gas stoves in the open; if this changes we will advise you. APPAREL | FOOTWEAR: Comfortable walking boots/shoes, jacket, hat, and dress according to the Castlemaine (not Melbourne) weather forecast.   LEADER: Ian G. | Email LeaderIanG.thenomadsinc@mail.tidyhq.com or phone 0414 654 872 if you have any questions. Members can access leader contact details under Members | Leader Contacts when logged in to the website.   HOME   BACK TO LIST OF EVENTS   MEMBERSHIPS

The Brimbank Park Loop is a 10 km trail located near the airport in Melbourne’s North West, that follows part of the upper Maribyrnong River and Brimbank Park. GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy-Medium, approximately 10 km, circuit walk with a total rise of 150m. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: Brimbank Park sits approximately 55 metres below the surrounding western plains. It was first settled by Europeans in the 1830s. The name is thought to have originated from the farmers moving their sheep and cattle 'around the brim of the bank' of the Maribyrnong River. This is a loop walk starting at Green Gully. The route uses a combination of sealed and well maintained gravel paths. There is one short, but fairly steep climb on the walk (70m), plus the ascent out of the valley at the end. A wetlands area has been extensively revegetated. Birds commonly seen in the park include blue wrens, yellow-tailed thornbills, flame robins, parrots and galahs, and a variety of water birds. Residing in the river red gums are brushtail and ringtail possums. You may see a blue-tongued lizard sunbaking, or catch sight of some swamp wallabies. The former Dodd farm is of regional historical significance for its association with the original European settlement and farming of the Maribyrnong Valley Note: Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a lead at all times.
