Explore Central Victoria by bike for a two or three day weekend, cycling from Shepparton to Tallarook with overnights in Mooroopna (Shepparton) and Murchison. This event is designed to be accessed via public transport.
GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate to Hard cycling of up to 70 km per day on widely varying surfaces.
Day 1: Moderate: leisurely cycling around Shepparton, ending in the suburb of Mooroopna.
Day 2: Medium, 40 km cycling from Mooroopna to Murchison. Optional 20 km extension (10 km out and 10 km back) on the Murchison-Rushworth Rail Trail.
Day 3: Hard, 69 km cycling from Murchison to Tallarook via Nagambie.
ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
A challenging, exploratory cycling trip in North Central Victoria. There will be an element of adventure, as we've never done this trip before and, although the route is well documented, it's not an official cycling trail. There will be the option to join the group in Shepparton on Friday night for those who need to work on Friday. Daylight saving will be in effect, giving us a bit more light at the end of the day. The event will proceed even if rain is forecast for the weekend, as there are some train station bailout options should conditions turn extremely nasty.
Upon arrival in Shepparton on Friday we'll immediately have lunch in central Shepparton, then explore some of Shepparton's many cycling paths, particularly those beside creeks and the Goulburn River, as we slowly make our way to our accommodation in Mooroopna. We'll probably dine locally in Mooroopna on Friday evening (or have a BBQ at our cabins).
On Saturday we'll follow assorted trails, tracks and quiet roads via Toolamba to Murchison, where we'll spend the night at the Murchison River Road Caravan Park. After having lunch in Murchison, those who wish to can cycle the short but scenic Murchison-Rushworth Rail Trail. Dinner on Saturday night will be at the Railway Hotel Murchison East.
On Sunday, the plan is to cycle from Murchison to Tallarook, with some fine dining at the Muse Restaurant (Mitchelton Winery) in Nagambie. From the restaurant it's a rather long, mostly on-road 33 km trek to Tallarook Station, from which there are trains approximately hourly. Alternatively, the Nagambie Station is only about 14 km away, but the only viable train service from there departs at 4:47pm.
BOOKING: By Friday 30th September, or ASAP to ensure you don't miss out on accommodation or lunch at the Mitchelton Winery. To register, click on Get Tickets. Accommodation costs will be collected during the event by the leader.
