East Gippsland Rail Trail, Nicholson to Bairnsdale walk
Southern Cross Train Station
07:45 – 20:44
Travel through the Latrobe Valley by train with views to the Baw Baw Plateau, a pub lunch, two short river walks with historic rail bridges and a bat colony.  GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Easy to Moderate 13.5 km walk, slightly undulating/flat on a paved, shared cycle rail trail and partly gravel on the river walks. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: A long day of travel but the current low fares makes venturing further out to new areas more appealing. Travel by train to Bairnsdale, then a short bus ride to Nicholson where we will have lunch on arrival at the Nicholson Hotel. After lunch we walk to the Nicholson River, past the small marina and to the East Gippsland Rail Trail with views of the rail bridge along the way. This part of the rail trail is on the far western end and 9 km long, and is part of the former Bairnsdale to Orbost rail line (opened 1916 and closed 1987) that mostly carried timber and farming produce. Passenger trains ceased in the 1930s and the line was dismantled in 1994. This part of the trail passes through open farmland predominantly for cattle and horse grazing with some long straight stretches and distant views to the Gippsland Lakes in some sections until we reach Howitt Park and the Mitchell River, just east of the main part of Bairnsdale. We view what's left of the former rail bridge across the river and the Little Swing Bridge across Clifton Creek, then we cross the river on the Princes Highway bridge (1958). We will walk along part of the Mitchell River walking track to view the small fruit bat colony (Grey-headed flying fox) - if we have time, then backtrack a little bit before cutting across town to the station. We may stop at the Grand Terminus Hotel (1889) for a quick drink, again, if we have time, before catching the train home. BOOKING: By Friday 5th July. To register click on Get Tickets. Mixed Naturist 10 Pin Bowling, Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne
Box Hill
19:30 – 22:00
EVENT UPDATE: Please note that we are fully booked out for this event. We have created a wait list in case there are cancellations which free up attendance spaces. Details are provided in the ticketing area. Thank you to all who have booked and paid for tickets. Join us for a fun evening of nude 10 pin bowling at a location in the Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. We have hired the entire venue. The event is open to Nomads members and visitors. Ticket holders will receive address details of the venue by Wednesday 3rd July 2024. Location given is approximate. We are only able to share the venue details, including the suburb, with confirmed ticket holders. Participants are not permitted to share the venue name or location. Please leave that to the organisers. SUPPER AT BOWLING VENUE: There was going to be an optional meal at a local restaurant after the bowling, but we now have an alternative, probably better, idea. We are now planning a bring-and-share supper in the room next to the bowling alley. This has been popular during previous similar events.  FOOD: You may bring your own non-alcoholic drinks to the venue to drink between bowls. Alcoholic drinks for personal consumption are permitted in the supper room adjoining the bowling area, but not in the room where we are bowling. No glass, please for safety, and ensure that no drinks at all are taken into the bowling lane area. Everyone is requested to bring a plate of food to share for supper. If you bring food that needs to be heated, please be aware that we only have access to a pie warmer. Please do not bring food on non-reusable plastic plates as these are not allowed at this type of event. It would be appreciated if everyone could bring your own cold drinks. Free tea and coffee will be provided. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We will meet out the front of the venue at 7.30pm if the weather is fine, or inside the foyer if it is raining. Please do not block the entrance, as other patrons may be leaving the building. We would ask that everyone is respectful of the venue staff, who are assisting us to make this event happen. Facemasks are not required to be worn but you may wear a mask if you would prefer. Hand sanitiser will be provided. Once introductions are completed, we will proceed to the bowling area. When advised by the Event Leader, everyone may then undress. All clothes can be left at the rear of the bowling alley. You may wish to bring a small bag for your clothes. There should be no problem with security, but we recommend that you do not bring valuables into the venue, as we are unable to take responsibility for any losses. The time allocated for bowling is 8pm until 10pm. Bowling shoes will be provided for all. You will each be able to select a suitable bowling ball to use during the evening, and then can join in with others at any one of the lanes. Do not worry if you are on your own, we will ensure that everyone finds a group to bowl with. You do not need to be experienced in 10 pin bowling. This is all about having fun with like minded people. Depending on the number of bowlers at each lane, you can typically expect to complete up to two games. There will be a small competition with prizes which will be awarded based on the individual scores of the first game. Once everyone has finished the first game, we will stop for presentation of prizes, and to share supper together. ACTIVITIES AFTER THE PRESENTATIONS: Once presentations have been made, you are free to continue with supper and talking to people, you may return to bowling, or for a fee of $8.20 payable at the front desk, you can have a swim in one of the indoor heated swimming pools on site. It would be appreciated if everyone could promptly depart the venue at 10pm. We would welcome the assistance of a few people to help the organisers with packing up after the night. PHOTOGRAPHY: In order to maintain everyone's privacy, please note that no photographs will be permitted except as advised by the Event Leader on the night. Phones are not to be used during the evening, and we thank you for assisting us with this. Please see the Event Leader Michael if you have any concerns. BOOKING: By 1pm on Wednesday 3rd July 2024. To register, click on Get Tickets. PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED. Tickets may sell out for this event, so book early. Tickets will be allocated on a "first come, first served" basis. No tickets will be available for purchase at the venue. Ticket prices for this event are the same for Nomads members and visitors to cover the cost of hire of the venue. No refunds on tickets will be available after 18th June 2024, except for inability to attend due to illness including Coronavirus, or if the event is cancelled by the Event Leader.   If the event is a sellout, a wait list will be created. Unsure if you've already booked? Click View my bookings. MEETING TIME | LOCATION: 7.30pm at the entrance to the venue, ticket holders will receive address details by Wednesday 3rd July 2024. DISTANCE | TIME FROM GPO: 20-25 km, approximately 30 minutes to drive, or 1 hour 10 minutes by public transport and walking. PUBLIC TRANSPORT: The venue is accessible by public transport. Approx 50min train journey from Flinders Street railway station, followed by a 30min walk. More precise public transport details will be provided to ticket holders by Wednesday 3rd July 2024. Exploring Historic Williamstown
Williamstown Railway Station
10:30 – 16:00
There are not many places like Williamstown - certainly not in greater Melbourne. The streets of Williamstown were amongst the first laid down by Europeans in Victoria in 1837. Up until then the narrow peninsula of Williamstown had been known to the local people as Koort-Boork-Boork, or "patch of she-oak trees." GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate 11.5 km circuit walk. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The day will see the group enjoy the seaside village atmosphere of Williamstown via three interlocking walks. This will be a stop-start walk as the Leader provides background notes on identified heritage sites. Lunch will be taken in one of the many "green" sites passed during the walk.  BOOKING: By Thursday 27th June. To register click on Get Tickets. Unsure if you've already booked?
