Cycling: Williams Landing to Southbank via Altona and Williamstown

On the AFL Public Holiday Friday, the weather forecast is for a glorious sunny day! Those Nomads who normally work on Fridays are invited to join the regular Friday cyclists for a wetlands and coastal ride in the west.

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate 23 km cycling to the lunch point, or Medium 36 km ride if continuing to Southern Cross Station. The ride will be almost entirely on sealed, off-road trails. See Williams Landing to Southbank via Altona and Williamstown for a map of the route.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: We will depart from the Williams Landing Station (near the station kiosk) at 10:30am. After a short distance we will join the Skeleton Creek Trail, which will take us to the Cheetham Wetlands on the coast. There we pick up the Bay Trail, which will take us via Altona to Williamstown, following the coast all the way, mostly through wetlands. Lunch will be at the Steam Packet Hotel, 30 Cole St, Williamstown. Our booking is for outdoors. After lunch you can exit the ride via the nearby Williamstown Station, or continue with the group via the Bay Trail, then the Footscray Road Trail to Docklands, with the ride officially finishing at Southern Cross Station.

MEETING TIME | LOCATION: Departure at 10:30am from Williams Landing Station. 

  • The Werribee train that departs from Flinders Street, probably platform 9 (but check monitors) at 9:47am (Southern Cross at 9:50am) should arrive at Williams Landing at 10:27am.  
  • If you'd like a pre-ride coffee from the kiosk at the Williams Landing Station, catch the Werribee train that departs from Flinders Street at 9:27am, arriving at Williams Landing at 10:07am.   
  • The group will travel in the rear carriage.

MAP REFERENCE:

FOOD: We will have lunch at the Steam Packet Hotel, 30 Cole St, Williamstown. 

APPAREL: Bike, helmet and appropriate attire for a sunny day. A spare tube is advisable. Don't forget sunscreen! See BOM Detailed Forecast for Williamstown.
