Kilmore - Trails and Town Walk

Sun, 4 Sep 2022
10:30 - 16:20

A non-indigenous settlement was established in Kilmore in 1837, some 13 years after Hume and Hovell passed through from Sydney on a colonial government financed search for Westernport Bay. This makes Kilmore the oldest inland town in Victoria. The traditional owners of Kilmore and the Kilmore Plains are the Taubgurong people, a part of the Kulin nation.

GRADE | LENGTH | TYPE: Moderate approximately 14 km, circuit walk, mostly on off-road paths, steep at times.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION: The walk will traverse East Kilmore Road before turning onto Monument Hill Road to checkout the marker on the spot visited by Hamilton Hume. The Hill walk passes excellent viewing spots of the greater Kilmore Plains and the Great Dividing Range. The wider Monument Hill Reserve contains many excellent flora and fauna specimens. Then downhill to pick-up the Kilmore Creek Trail into the centre of Kilmore, which houses many historic buildings dating from the mid 1800's. Lunch will be taken at a suitable spot along the Creek Trail. The final leg will be on Union Street, passing the Kilmore Racing Complex, then leading onto East Kilmore Road back to the Station.

Time permitting, an Afternoon Tea break will be taken at one of the two local bakeries located on Sydney Street before the 3 kms walk back to the Station.
