Do you have an interest in overseas walking tours? Have you done overseas walking tours in the past? If so, you'll enjoy this information sharing evening.

GRADE: social - online via Zoom.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION:
We're all itching to get outdoors at present, but sadly that's just a dream as yet. Let's turn those daydreams into concrete plans, and/or fond memories of past walking experiences. This will be an information sharing evening to give you some background to the extensive network of walking routes known as "The Camino", which are located primarily in Spain, but also extend throughout Europe. We'll also look at some photos of past Camino experiences.

The presentation will cover topics such as:

  • What is “the Camino”?
  • Why do it?
  • The most popular Camino routes.
  • How to plan and prepare your trip.
  • An overview of accommodation, food and transport options, and their costs.
  • Some navigation tips.
  • Some useful references and resources.

One of the great strengths of the Camino is that there are many, many different ways you can do it. Presenters will talk about some of the different ways the Camino can be done:

  • Alan Drummond will talk about walking parts of Portuguese and Spanish caminos "the pilgrim way" - staying overnight in albergues (basic, backpacker-style inns).
  • Jennifer Lyons and her husband, joining us from Barcelona, will talk about the support services they can offer. Jennifer, who lives in both Sydney and Barcelona, founded Crossroads Travel, a tour group assisting people who would like to do the Camino in a more supported way. Her husband is very knowledgeable on the Camino route.
  • Ian Gould will talk about his "gourmet tour" along the Le Puy (French) and Francés (Spanish) Caminos, staying in accommodation of one, two or more stars.

If you've walked or cycled any Camino routes yourself, you're most welcome to share some photos or experiences with the group. Using Zoom you can easily share any presentation from your computer with the audience.
